Today was Carter’s ear tube surgery and he handled it like a trooper! We had to leave the house at 5:00 am in order to be at the hospital by 5:30 am. I scooped Carter up at the last minute and as we were walking out the door he squealed with excitement “I’m going to the hospital today”. He was laughing and cutting up with all the nurses and having a wonderful time. Every time someone would ask “do you know why you’re here today” he would pipe up and say “to fix my ears.” They only let one of the parents back in the pre-op area so John graciously said I could go. When we got to the pre-op area they had a bunch of toys and books. They gave Carter some Versaid to drink to relax him before the procedure (not that he needed it) and we started reading a book. The book was one of those interactive kinds where you push a button when you get to a certain point in the story. It was a book about a firetruck and the button would sound a siren every time you pushed it. Carter was enjoying “reading” along and pushing the button. By the time we got to the end of the book, the medicine had kicked in which made him “drunk” so he had trouble finding the button! It was hilarious! He would just laugh and laugh! They wheeled him into the O.R. and he gave me a big kiss and said “bye” making the word at least 400 syllables!
There were only 10 minutes between leaving Carter and the doctor coming out to tell us everything went beautifully and it was only 10 more minutes until they were wheeling him out. He had a little trouble coming out of the anesthesia (meaning he was REAL grouchy) but once he was back in his room and I climbed into bed with him he was great!
He was a little groggy on the drive home but by the time we got home he was back to his normal self. He never did have pain (thank goodness) and has already said his ears feel better! We are so proud of him!
